OTP 2 - BOOK PLAN + RESEARCH
- In order to gain knowledge on the types of layouts used for photo books, I went to the "Art Words" book shop.
- Here they had a large variety of books with different styles and subject matters. I was able to find books with similar topics to the one I wanted to created, about public transport. It was helpful viewing books in person rather than online as you are able to go through the book properly and see how it flows/works as a whole book, rather then snippets of the book online.
- I also found books, that had different subject matters, however I saw layouts and presentation choices that I felt would work very well in my book.
MIKE GOLDWATER
- Mike Goldwater's pictures, taken in the '70s and '80s, capture moments of tenderness and life that lie beneath the underground.
- He searched for key moments that capture unexpected moments of intimacy and humour on the Underground, and life that lie beneath that: the kisses goodbye, the man cradling a cat, another smoking deep in thought, the homeless man curled up next to his belongings. We also see old ticket booths (before Travelcards existed), retro carriages, whisky adverts and bell flares.
- These images, full of human interaction, take us back to a time when it was fine to talk (and smoke) on our beloved Underground.
- What inspired me most about this layout was the simplicity; there is no fancy text or designs, it purely focuses on the beautiful black and white moments from the 70s. This basic layout makes us focus more on the story/interaction taking place in each image, rather than the book design
- I feel that this is important, especially with images that involve intimacy/moments in time, as it is clear to the audience what the main subject is (the people) and this makes us appreciate the photographs more.
- The straight forward layout and the black and white images also give off a documentary feel to the photo book, which went really well with this book as it is documenting moment in the past.
- For my book I aim to have a similar layout, that is simplistic, and has little to no text. This is because I want the main focus of the viewer to be on the moments taking place within the images.
LONDON NIGHTS
- 'London Nights' is a collection of historic and contemporary images from different decades, which features work from over 60 photographers who photograph the city when its dark out.
- " The book contains essays by Museum of London’s Curator of Photographs, Anna Sparham, poetry by award-winning poet and playwright Inua Ellams, and over 100 images from the exhibition that span the genres of architectural, documentary and portrait photography. Includes work by Bill Brandt, Bob Collins, Brian Griffin, Tish Murtha, Tim Peake, Rut Blees Luxemburg, William Eckersley, Dougie Wallace, Nick Turpin and many more." - HOXTON
- This was originally an exhibition launched in May 2018 at the Museum of London, and the book launched in conjunction with the exhibit.

-Similar to Mike Goldwater's book, the layout is basic/plain, which allows the attention to be drawn directly to the eerie scenes of the London Nights.
- However, different to the previous book, I really liked the way the images were presented. An example being the bottom left screen shot, which spreads one image across two. This makes the page of the book appear more interesting, whilst maintaining the simplistic layout.
- This is something I want to experiment with in my photo book, because although I want the layout to be simplistic, I don't want the pages to be the exact same throughout.
- Another factor I liked was the text layout. It is very plain and neat, which links to the layout of the book, and gives off a documentary style vibe, which links to the types of photos in the book also.
WIM WENDERS
- Although this wasn't in the book store, I was inspired by the layout of Wim Wenders book: Instant Stories.
- This book is a collection of personal moments in Wenders life, weather this be portraits of friends, actors or personal heros, the young travelling filmmaker documents these moments, and his journey around the world (first trips to USA, American TV screens) in the 1970s.
- The adventure of shooting films around the world becomes an almanac of adventure, and Wenders showcases this in his book.

- I really liked the scrapbook style portrayed through the Polaroids. This gives the book more of a personal feel to Wim Wenders, with the scrapbook representing personal moments that happened in his life (meeting actors, seeing places) that he wants to cherish as these are memorable moments
- Being shot as a Polaroid film gives his images a different look/feel to most photographers imagery, as many shot on film in the 70s, where as Wenders stuck to Polaroid as he likes the fact that you can only have one copy/one original of the image, which can't be copied.
LEARNING IN-DESIGN:
- Terry Hawes, a man who works very close with InDesign, gave us a training session on the basic tools and techniques used to create a book on the software.
- I found it useful learning about the tools as well as useful techniques that will be of use when creating my book.
FINAL FLAT PLAN:
- The book is 24 pages long, and will include 21 images
- W: 845px x H: 598px
- Similar to my research, I chose to create a book with a simplistic layout. This is because I wanted the attention of the viewer to be drawn to the story in the images.
- My images will also have a documentary feel, and this style of book suits that type of theme best.

- For the front cover I chose to have one main image. This will give me a lot of options to choose from when selecting with this being the whole cover, in comparison to if there was a design.
- I plan to use an establishing shot for the cover to give the audience an insight as to what the book entails.
PORTRAIT FRAMES:
- I chose to place these in the centre of the page to make it clear that this image is the main focus of the page.
- I wanted to use a portrait image on my introduction page, as I felt a close up portrait of a subject in a mask would be very eye catching and attention grabbing.
LANDSCAPE FRAMES:
- I experimented with a few layouts for landscapes as I didn't want the images to become repetitive.
- The landscape shots will be used mostly for establishing shots and some portraits.
- I wanted the frames to be big so that the viewer would be able to see the whole scene clearly. However for the smaller frames, I will include portraits and small detail shots here to create a montage of images with the same/similar subject matters.
- Overall I am very happy with this layout, as it includes the simplistic theme that I was aiming for.
BOOK INTRODUCTION:
- "119 to, Purley Way Colonnades" "367 to, Bromley North" 54 to, Elmers End", the TFL bus announcements heard by commuters on a daily basis, or what used to be a daily basis. Covid-19 has   TFL bus revenues down £50m a week, as of March 2020, and what used to be normal is now no more, with passenger numbers slumping due to the virus.

Although numbers may be down, there are still thousands of workers commuting to and from work, using this service on a daily basis. From the eeriness of the empty buses, to the unusual face masks, this photo book is a collection of imagery documenting the commute of residents in the London Suburb: Croydon.

With the restriction of being 2 meters apart from people, photographer, Lambros McKenzie, used different styles of shooting to maintain a safe distance from the public, whilst still being able to feel connected to subjects through his photography. He photographed commuter's from the middle of May, up until the beginning of June. This was at the end of the first wave where restrictions where lifted and going out was slowly becoming normal.
BOOK PRINTING RESEARCH:
- I selected “White Wall” as they have up to 4 different types of photographic paper to choose from, as well as allowing for InDesign/PDFs to be used for printing.
- You are able to create a 24 Page book for £50
- They allow you to customise the "Printing Technique", Type of Cover and Backing, the Format, Surface and Inside Paper Type.
